Telling the Real Story met with members of the diaspora in Stockholm, Sweden. The diaspora talked of lack of understanding of the psychological impact on persons who have travelled irregularly. Talking about psychological issues is considered a taboo in the Somali community and they felt that the TRS platform would help break the taboo. The diaspora emphasized the importance of the community in opening up and talking about the trauma.
The community members called on TRS to increase the visibility for regular alternative pathways such as scholarship opportunities. The community members expressed an interest in being part of such initiatives.
The Somali diaspora continues to play a major role in decision-making and acts as both guide and instructor for many migrants and refugees.
Diaspora engagement is crucial to ensuring that messaging on onward movement is adapted to the populations the project engages with.
