Joy's story: Fleeing insecurity and violence, ending up in slavery
“The desert was the hardest part of the journey. That desert isn’t easy. That desert, once you get in, there is no going back. At night they’d come and wake us up and say they want to sleep with a woman. If you refuse, they’ll beat you or you’ll be shot or stabbed with a knife and die.We lost many of our friends, brothers and sisters. At the end, only ten people were left in the pickup truck out of all those who had started the journey.” Joy says.
“I jumped from the window and ran before they came back. The nurse was bringing an injection and other tools to abort the pregnancy, so I ran away. That’s how me and the man ran away. Then we fled across the sea.” She recounts.
